Gradient

The gradient tells you how steep a line is. It is the rise divided by the run.

  • Positive gradient: the line goes up to the right.
  • Negative gradient: the line goes down to the right.
  • Horizontal line: . Vertical line: gradient is undefined.

The equation of a line

is the gradient and is the y-intercept, where the line crosses the y-axis. In the taxi story and .

x y run 1 rise 2 c = 1 y = 2x + 1
Start at the intercept, then go across 1 and up 2.

Distance and midpoint

For points and :

The distance formula is just Pythagoras on the grid.

Parallel and perpendicular lines

A line perpendicular to has gradient .

General form

Lines are also written as . To find the gradient, rearrange into . For : , so .

Straight lines
Gradient
  • Rise over run
  • Positive, negative, zero
Equation
  • y = mx + c
  • ax + by + c = 0
Two points
  • Distance: Pythagoras
  • Midpoint: average
Pairs of lines
  • Parallel: same m
  • Perpendicular: product is -1
Models
  • Start value and rate

Quick summary

  • Gradient : rise over run.
  • : is the gradient, is the y-intercept.
  • Distance uses Pythagoras. The midpoint is the average of the coordinates.
  • Parallel lines: same gradient. Perpendicular lines: .
  • Point-gradient form: .
