Starting point: Years 9 and 10

Equation Name Shape
linear straight line
parabola U shape
cubic S shape through the origin
hyperbola two curves that never touch the axes
exponential flat on the left, shoots up on the right
circle centre , radius
y = x³ y = 1/x y = 2ˣ x² + y² = r²
Four shapes to know on sight.

Asymptotes

An asymptote is a line a graph gets closer and closer to but never reaches.

  • has asymptotes and , because you cannot divide by zero and is never zero.
  • has the asymptote on the left.

Hyperbolas and inverse variation

describes inverse variation: double and halves. If , the curves sit in the first and third quarters. If , they sit in the second and fourth.

Circles

is a circle centred at the origin with radius . So has radius 5.
